Funny.

So, today after picking up my son from school, I was driving down my street almost to my driveway when I see that 2 cars in front of me Lizzy's social worker is turning into my driveway.

No appointment, no call, THIRD time she has tried this!!!!!!!! If you want to come here CALL ME.

So I did what any good foster mom would do. I drove right past my driveway, and down the street, did a loop big enough that I knew she would be gone by the time I got back and then went home.

Lady, you better start calling me before you come to my house.

Haha!!! I LOVE IT! My girls' caseworker has called several times around 3 p.m. and asked if she can come by that afternoon or evening. I am a teacher, so I don't even get home until nearly 5 p.m., so if I haven't planned on a visitor that evening, it is a HUGE inconvenience. I always tell her we have plans and that if she's like to SCHEDULE a visit I'd be happy to look at my calendar. Yes, they are allowed to "drop by" any time they like. However, I am not obligated to drop what I'm doing and be home at a moment's notice...and you're not obligated to go home for a "surprise" visit. Good job!!

just another reason I love living out in Amish country! It litteraly takes over an hour for the worker to reach my house, so they don't do drop bys ever! I am really blessed in theat regaurd:)
Good Job not stopping Mamma!!!!

I cannot even imagine a drop by visit... So far that hasn't happened to us, but I would have done exactly what you did! :)

Our visits have always been scheduled. But the workers do like to come by just minutes after all the cherubs get home from school. I usually let them know that they are walking into a landmine of hyperactivity. They come anyway.

That is great!! Our agency has a policy that county workers cannot visit us without an agency worker. Which means they have to schedule! I would die if I had to subject myself to pop ins in addition to all the other humiliations of fostering!

We don't have that problem...

That is too funny!!!! Our kids worker has been to our house a total of one whole time in two months. We have only had two visits with the mom. So we don't have too much inconvience. Plus she lives/works almost 2 hours away so she's not going to drive all that way unless she knows we are at home. It helps that we have a Great Dane dog and and she is scared of even little bitty dogs!!! Thanks for giving me a good laugh!!!

I came across your blog yesterday and this may sound stalkerish but I spent the last two days reading the whole thing!!! I have always wanted to be a foster parent and my dream is to one day adopt a little girl (I have 3 boys and would love to get some pink into my house lol). I look forward to reading more about your family :)

That's awesome! Anyone who comes to my house better schedule it...or you will get more then you bargained for!

Ha ha! That is pretty funny :) In our case, the workers are in 2 counties over so even though I take a half day off from work, if the traffic is bad enough they'll just cancel it. Like it's nothing to take a half day off for me. We're now only accepting kids from our county so I'm expecting more drop-bys.

In the 3 years we've been licensed, we've only had 2 dropins. Once we were home and once our teenager was home.

We live on a culdesac so we can't do what you did. Dog gone it! Love it!

That's really interesting, because here (before adjudication) they have to see the child every week...for the month 3 will be announced and 1 HAS to be unannounced! So we have had a few surprises and you just roll with it!

My son's social worker NEVER scheduled his visits. He would just pop in every once in awhile and I kind of got used to it. One time he even helped to reinforce discipline, so that was handy. :)

I am on the other side of things...I am a county caseworker... :) There are several of my foster parents that I love, and I will only "drop by" if I am honestly in the neighborhood and have something to drop off. Even then, I make my purpose known when the door is answered, and don't ask to come in! On the other hand, I have some shifty foster parents...and I do drop-ins every month. My job remains the same whether children are at home with their parents with an order of supervision or in foster care...I need to make sure that they are safe. And sometimes, making sure they are safe means dropping in and finding foster care situations that are worse than the situation the child would have been in at home...
