Overwhelmed.

I don't know the technical name for it, but Lizzy has a issue with certain noises and I call it "sensory issues".

Part of it is being 3 yrs old and being scared of stuff she doesn't understand, but she is SO sensitive to noises, especially cars while running when she isn't in them.

Tonight we went out to a outdoor hotdog stand for dinner and then out for ice cream outdoors a few doors down. Both were right off of a main road. The poor kid was totally overwhelmed by the sound of so much traffic and was a jittery mess most of the time.

I assume it has something to do with her mom using drugs while pregnant with her, BUT that may not be the case at all.

She did fine besides being so overwhelmed. I love seeing her doing a tiny bit better each day.

Bless her heart.

My Peyton is scared of loud noises too and the thing that bothers him most is loud toilets. He won't use the bathroom while we are out because the toilets are loud when people flush. If there is no one in the bathroom and I tell him he can go out before I flush he will go in and pee for me but he is a nervous wreck the whole time.

I too have wondered if it has to do with the prenatal drug exposure that makes them sensitive the loud noises. Hmm.

Glad Lizzy did good other than the traffic noise. :)

My kids are like this too!!! They will start screaming and shaking with ANY unknown or loud noise, I HATE HATE HATE loud toilets. My kids could hear a mouse fart....I figured mine was trauma caused around loud noises. My kids were VERY isolated and neglected, I assumed that loud, unknown noises meant danger in their scary world..

My son has sensory issues with loud noises--particularly loud music. Before our church got an electronic drum set, they used to amplify all of the other instruments to match the volume of the drums. It made my ears hurt. My youngest son couldn't be in church during the praise and worship time, because he simply couldn't tolerate the loudness. He has the same issue in the car, at the movies, and with the TV. He was substance-exposed and exposed to domestic violence in-utero and suffered severe abuse and neglect throughout early childhood. He has vestibular and proprioceptive sensory deficits, too. He has benefitted from occupational therapy and other sensory activities.

I feared idling cars when I was a child and didn't really get comfortable around them until well into adulthood. They always seemed like a latent threat to me. I have no idea why.

I love seeing the progress too...even if it seems invisible at times, it's there.

Sensory integration issues are actually a really common symptom of PTSD in children.

(I'm a therapist who works with foster/adopted kids with PTSD - almost EVERY kid I work with has some kind of sensory sensitivity)

If you WANT a book, try "Too loud, too bright, too fast, too tight" by Dr. Sharon Heller.

My daughter is the same. We are looking at sensory issues right now. This one is auditory. Going to check in to that boom anon mentioned.
I've been reading the Out of Sync Child which is about sensory disorder.
Glad you continued to see improvements.

My stepson has never been officially diagnosed; however a doctor has said that he was a super-taster. He can tell the difference in brands of syrup! Also, he cringes when we cut food on our plates.

He's 20 now and seems to be okay. Hugs to you.

The Out of Sync Child is one that my mom would HIGHLY recommend. My brother has autism and sensory integration dysfunction disorder. My mom found that this book was exactly him.

I've been surfing on-line more than 3 hours these days, but I by no means discovered any interesting article like yours. It is pretty price enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content as you probably did, the internet shall be a lot more useful than ever before.

Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple,
yet effective. A lot of times it's hard to get that "perfect balance" between usability and visual appearance. I must say you have done a awesome job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Chrome. Outstanding Blog!
